I saw girls en masse at my gym today, which was a first. I’m often the only girl in there. The guys are like guys everywhere. They pump iron, they grunt, they sweat. The girls are a different case entirely. I suspect that they don’t like to sweat. They move, but not very quickly. Can you envision a somewhat desultory girly-girl exercising in high heels and fashion accessories? It’s a little bit like that. Snapshot: one young women was getting a training session, which was continually interrupted as the trainer left to answer her cell phone. Each time the young woman sat patiently - without moving - waiting for the return of her trainer.

That photo just about says it all, where male and female gender stereotypes are concerned. I wanted to post an analogous photo I shot in Nogales (Mexico) this spring -- of an advertising billboard featuring Paris Hilton shilling for some obscure brand of vodka, I think -- but I couldn't figure out how to upload the photo to your site via the comments window. On an unrelated note, here's a piece in today's NY Times about the movement for Kosovo's independence, and the resistance this is generating in the Serbs and their Russian partners in crime: Serbs See Rift With West if Kosovo Gains Independence
