As a fan of post office museums, I’m intrigued by the cultural diversity of postal systems. So when Richard and I set off this morning to mail some letters, I thought maybe we were in for an adventure. First stop UPS: this didn’t take long, since neither of us was willing to part with 46 euros ($65) to mail our tax return. Our next stop was the main post office. After a few quizzical looks and some phone calls, we were told they didn’t sell stamps, only phone and internet credit. Apparently, there are private and public post offices. We were directed to the Skenderbeu square monument, where we might find another post office that sold stamps. This didn’t quite work out. I kept asking for directions until – Yureka! – we found a stamp seller. We’ll see if a registered letter to the IRS makes it Fresno. I sent a regular letter off to Tucson, and the cost (a little over $3) surprised me. Heads up: I’ll be sending postcards.
