We spent the day in Prizren, a few hours south of here. This was Richard's much anticipated - and needed - excursion out of Pristina to visit a friend and fellow colleague, Kirsten. The day dawned soggy and wet, but Richard and I traipsed toward the bus station, bent on getting out of town. The rains stopped soon after our arrival in this lovely, historic town: cobblestone streets, pedestrian sidewalks, fortress ruins, and a post-shower raging river. We turned down an offer of coffee with Kirsten's landlord; rude, perhaps, but we were so anxious to explore. We also didn't know how much time we would have, since we could get no definitive answer on when we could expect to catch the last bus out of town. We circled the city on foot, which didn't take long, and then walked up to and beyond the fortress ruins, finally winding our way back to town. This serene, pleasant trail - complete with a honey vendor - made me realize how much I miss walking and talking (at the same time). Conversation was relaxed and easy. Kirsten is a hiker/runner/backpacker who also loves the desert, so we had much to talk about. I dallied several times taking pictures, and it pleased me to look up and see Richard engaged in conversation with someone besides me. We are a universe of 2.5 here (Hazel doesn't get full standing, since her language skills are sub-par). It's good and necessarily to talk -really talk - with other people, but it hasn't been easy to do that here.

How wonderful to know that you both got to go on an out of town excursion together. The pictures are wonderful ... especially the one beside your blog. Prizren looks like a fascinating, historic town. I'm wondering where dear Hazel was ... did she have to spend the day alone at home? Love to you both. Mom

Hi Mum! Hazel did spend the day at home: she can't go on buses. We had someone scheduled to take her for an afternoon walk, but the key didn't work. This, after making two to the keymaker, testing and re-testing the keys, etc. Nothing works as expected here. It turns out that we had a glorious day in Prizren and were only gone about 8 hours.
